When your veteran returns, it helps for you to be informed about available services. Your local V.A. hospitals and Vet Center will have psychologists, counselors, PTSD specialists, and others who can help your veteran work through post-deployment adjustment issues. Plus, your veteran can go there to meet other returning veterans who are dealing with the same thing.

The first thing your veteran will need to do is enroll for services. Some people fill out the enrollment paperwork before they even come home, but you can also sign up online or go to a V.A. hospital in person. There is a six-month cut-off to enroll for dental services, but no deadline for enrolling for everything else.

The V.A. provides free healthcare--including free mental health counseling--for five years. After that, it comes at a reduced cost, with co-pays adjusted according to income. And the V.A. will treat service-related injuries free for life.
