CHARLIE: Tips?

EMMA: You know, like tips on balancing college life, school work, having fun, that kind of stuff. They're there to help you out in whatever way you want them to.

COACH: You asked a question in a way that invited Charlie to share more, which helped him consider the idea of the counseling center.

COACH: You asked a question that invited Charlie to share more, which usually may be a good way to approach the counseling center option, but Charlie specifically just said he didn't want to consider somewhere that he thought would judge him for his choices.

COACH: You asked a question that invited Charlie to share more, which usually may be a good way to approach the counseling center option, but Charlie specifically said earlier he didn't want to consider somewhere that he thought would judge him for his choices.

CHARLIE: I mean, we could talk about it, I guess? It's just uh, "Counseling Center" seems like a little much, no? Like that's for people that're, like in a super dark place. And I'm still okay, right? Look, I can smile.

EMMA: Promise me you won't make that face in public.

CHARLIE: (laughs, then sighs)

EMMA: The counseling center is for everybody, no matter what they're going through. My roommate's been going there, and has got involved in more groups as well, she's always telling me about these activities the school puts on I wouldn't really know about otherwise, movies, and speakers, and a whole lot of free food. I've been interested to check it out too. I could even go with you, if you wanted?

CHARLIE: Yeah? You'd come with?

EMMA: Sure, I mean, they're there for us. Might be worth it to see just what they even have.

COACH: You included yourself as part of the 'team' in the visiting the counseling center, which made Charlie more comfortable discussing this option.

CHARLIE: I guess. Can't hurt to check it out, especially if they can point us to stuff that's going on. Maybe I'll find out I actually have a love of, um, bassoon music or something.

EMMA: (laughs) Who knows!

EMMA: How do you feel about chatting with someone that knows about this stuff, who's lived it and is a bit more relatable, but still kinda 'off the record.

CHARLIE: (joking) I'm definitely not gonna talk to your dad.

EMMA: (laughs) No, like to someone on staff, a student leader or R.A. or something?

COACH: You asked a question that invited Charlie to share his thoughts, which helped Charlie to consider discussing the R.A. option.

CHARLIE: Hmm, maybe. Just feels like it might be a bit awkward? Talking to some random person? About like drinking and stuff?

EMMA: I liked the R.A. we had first semester, what was his name?

CHARLIE: Oh, uh, Bryan? Yeah he was pretty cool.

EMMA: Yeah, didn't we see him at one of the concerts we went to?

CHARLIE: (laughs) Oh yeah, he's the lead guitarist in that, uhhh, Phlying Fishez. Right, right. Yeah, guess he's had his share of wild nights. Maybe he'll be worth talking to.

COACH: You gently reminded Charlie about an R.A. that you and he thought was all right, but left it for him to fill in the blanks. As a result, he decided the R.A. option was one he might try.

CHARLIE: Yeah. So I could talk to someone, I guess. Maybe just tell them where I'm at, get their thoughts, see what they might've done?

EMMA: Nice!

EMMA: What might be some reasons to want to keep things low key tonight, if you go out at all?

CHARLIE: It'd be nice to not have a headache like today.

EMMA: Yeah (inside joke) bonk bonk bonk? Not so fun.

CHARLIE: Truuuuuuuth. But, I dunno.

COACH: You asked a question that invited Charlie to share his thoughts, which helped him consider not going out tonight.

EMMA: There's midterms next week too.

CHARLIE: Yeah, I know. (sighs)

EMMA: I definitely could use some extra time to study. How'd you feel about joining for a bit?

CHARLIE: Would help pull my grades back up. We could even reward ourselves with a night of tacos and, and that video game we did last time at your place uh, Sloth Arenaaaaa!! Yessssssssss.

EMMA: (laughs) Sounds fun.

COACH: You remembered a motivation Charlie had for not drinking as much, his grades are slipping, and linked it to not going out tonight, which helped Charlie decide to stay in. Breaking the cycle a little bit can help Charlie do this himself in the future.

CHARLIE: All right, I hear what you're saying. I think I might want to stay in.

EMMA: OK, thanks. I didn't mean to be weird or anything. Just checking in.

CHARLIE: Yeah, I got you. I'm glad you said something.

EMMA: Hey, I'm glad to hear you're willing to check out the counseling center!

CHARLIE: Can't hurt to walk inside a building. Especially if you're along for the ride.

CHARLIE: (thoughtful) It might be actually good to chat with one of the RA's.

CHARLIE: And yeah. I'm not going out tonight. Just not worth the pain.

EMMA: Cool. Thanks for chatting about this today.

CHARLIE: For sure. I'm, I guess I'm glad you brought it up.

EMMA: (genuine) You know I'll always be here for you.

CHARLIE: I know. Thanks Em.
