The five most important things to pay attention to in a nutrition label are:

  • Serving Size
  • Servings Per Container
  • Total Carbohydrate
  • Total Fat
  • Sodium

Food companies try to make their food seem healthier than it is. The nutrition label tells you about what is in one serving size. The serving size may be much smaller than how much food is in the container. If you eat everything in the container, you may be eating many times what the nutrition label says.

“Total Carbohydrate” on the nutrition label tells you the total amount of sugar and starch in one serving of the food. If you’re trying to choose between two brands, choose the one with the lower amount of Total Carbohydrate.

Pay attention to “Total Fat” on the nutrition label because you don’t want too much fat, especially if you’re trying to lose weight.

Sodium means salt. Salt affects your blood pressure, which affects your blood sugar. Again, pay attention to how much you’re actually eating, not just how much is listed in one serving size.
