Identify Development Areas

("Reflect" level of questioning)
PAUL: I noticed that you combined homework collection, attendance, and the warm-up into the first five minutes of class, like we talked about earlier in the year. How has that been affecting your lessons?

WILL: Well, when class gets started faster, it's definitely less of a rush to get through the rest of the period. It's easier to get to everything on my lesson plan.

("Scaffold" level of questioning)
PAUL: I agree that the steps you've been taking have made it easier to complete your lessons. How much of your lesson did you complete yesterday?

WILL: Oh, I definitely got through everything on my list. Though... I guess they did the last activity for homework and not in class... and they didn't have as much time with the group work as I wanted, but... not every lesson is a slam-dunk, I guess. (shrugs)

PAUL: Do you remember how long it took to transition to group work?

WILL: Not really... I was kind of juggling bathroom requests and fielding questions at the time. Maybe a few minutes?

("Present Data" level of questioning)
PAUL: I was watching the clock, and it took over 10 minutes before everyone was working.

WILL: Well naturally there were a few stragglers, but I think most of the class transitioned faster than that.

("State Issue" level of questioning)
PAUL: Since confusion about activity directions made that transition take over 10 minutes, I'd like to discuss how we can maximize your instructional time. This will help you teach more content, and it will raise student achievement.

WILL: Well, if you think it's necessary, I guess we can discuss that. Is this really going to help me?

PAUL: I'm here to pinpoint ways to help you improve. What I saw was you only got through 30 minutes of a 50-minute lesson, so I want to work with you today to figure out what you could do--tomorrow, even--to make sure you consistently finish lessons.

WILL: (sigh) You're... you're right, I could do better with that.

PAUL: Let's move on. I'd like to work together to brainstorm some steps you could take to maximize your instructional time. And I want to hear your ideas.

WILL: Sure.
