You should also make note of any behavioral warning signs that worry you while interviewing a patient. For instance: if a patient seems irritable, agitated, or depressed, or has dramatic or unexpected changes in affect during your conversation – for example, goes from acting fine to being tearful or even weeping – those are warning signs that something's wrong.

A good mnemonic to help remember warning signs is IS PATH WARM:

  • Ideation
  • Substance Abuse
  • Purposelessness
  • Anxiety
  • Trapped
  • Hopelessness or helplessness
  • Withdrawal
  • Anger
  • Recklessness, and
  • Mood changes
