The Referral Process Part 2: Student Support Teams
The referral process might look different if you have a Student Support
Team, or SST, at your school. SSTs are a small team of school staff and
parents or guardians who develop and implement individualized
strategies to support students who show signs of distress.
Not
all schools have an SST, but if yours does, you may be asked to
participate at some point.
After identifying a non-crisis situation and documenting your own
attempts to resolve the issue, you may choose to contact the SST at
your school. With your participation, the SST will discuss which
interventions are appropriate and implement them. The team members
typically observe student behavior within the classroom for several
weeks to determine whether the strategies are effective, then choose to
maintain or modify the strategies, or refer the student for a special
education assessment.
Remember, each school has its own protocol for referring students to
behavioral health services. Be sure you’re familiar with the
protocol at your school.
